OUR STORY

In December 2016, Studio One Dance Founder and Director, Rebecca Ward, began teaching classes to Capitol Hill’s tiniest dancers with a unique curriculum rooted in proper technique and the nurturing principles of play. Her classes at neighborhood venues were in such high demand that Studio One Dance moved into its own space on 11th Street. Outside, the studio’s whimsical window displays changed monthly and enchanted dancers with glittering rainbows and shimmering snowflakes. Inside, the studio bustled with classes seven days a week. The studio began offering birthday parties, summer programming, and camps.

The 2023 dance year launched in a new location on 7th Street, where more than 300 families are enrolled to dance with Ms. Becky and her team.

OUR MISSION

Studio One Dance introduces children ages 18 months through 10 years to the art and technique of dance. Classes expose students to classical and contemporary music, as well as stories from renowned ballets and Broadway shows. Young dancers learn comportment as proper performers and audience members. Most importantly, they develop a genuine love for dance.

OUR SPACE

At 738 7th Street Southeast, Studio One Dance occupies a two-story facility that has been discerningly renovated to optimize dancers’ needs and comforts. Both the downstairs Moon Studio and upstairs Star Studio have professionally installed stage flooring and mirrors, and soundproofing ensures a focused, distraction-free class as sessions are run in parallel.

In the lobby, dancers and their families enjoy comfortable, ample seating with amenities such as cubbies, a children’s library, powder room, and CCTV that offers a real-time view of classes.

At the reception desk, a Studio One team member is available to adjust a ponytail, fit a borrowed dance shoe, sell studio-branded merchandise, or answer questions.

OUR community

Some Studio One dancers in the most advanced classes began with Dancing Together at two years old. Studio One Dance is evolving to accommodate its maturing dancers’ interests, not only with expanding curriculum, but also with events like Dancer’s Night Out and studio excursions to stage performances in Washington, DC. Dancers of all ages and their families are invited to the annual Twirl-and-Treat Party at Halloween, Visitors Week at the winter holidays, and the end-of-year recital.

OUR team

Six instructors and three assistants comprise the Studio One Dance team. Each member of the team is a lifelong dancer with a passion for movement and for early childhood dance education. Learn more about the Studio One Dance team in their bios
